Virunga National Park announced the loss of 5 rangers and a staff driver in the Central Sector of Virunga National Park near the Ishasha border of the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC).

The men were gunned down by men in the Mai Mai militia group early on Monday morning near the border with Uganda. The Mai Mai was founded in the 1990s to fight cross-border attacks from Rwanda.

Park officials assured the security in the other sectors of the park is still good and tourism activities are continuing safely.

The Lulimbi camp is closed until further notice. Park officials anticipate it will reopen in the not too distant future.

More than 150 rangers have been killed protecting Virunga National Park which was established in 1925.
